Maritime Concert Opera is presenting my new work Morgan Le Fay. Morgan le Fay’s story is drawn from Arthurian legend, with a woman-centred twist.
Morgan was said to be Arthur’s half sister and full sister to Elaine and Morgase. Traditionally Morgan was branded an evil witch or a sorceress but other interpretations see her as a priestess of the Old Religion.
When the opera starts, Morgan has retreated to Avalon, an ancient mystical island which still keeps alive the worship of the Goddess and is a safe place for women with the power of prophecy. One day Morgan is visited by her sister, Elaine, whom she has not seen in many years. Something is going on in Britain. Women are being persecuted. Villages burned. Morgan’s name and the name of Avalon are being called evil. Arthur’s nephew, Mordred, assisted by a misguided Bishop, are trying to take over Britain while Arthur is absent. Morgan must leave Avalon and save Britain, but will she be in time? Will Avalon survive?
This is the first workshop performance of the work, and will be presented in concert with piano accompaniment.
